Summer Institute 2023

Jumping from Joy to Action: Empowering energy and climate changemakers through play, hope, and wonder.

The 2023 VEEP/NHEEP Summer Institute encourages teachers to use play, wonder, and hope as catalysts for inspiring students to make change, and to find joy in taking action. We will model empowering, interdisciplinary, student-driven instructional practices to connect students to energy and climate topics and to help them find meaningful and authentic ways to be part of evidence-based solutions in their communities.

August 7-11 2023, World fellowship center, Albany, NH

Participants will:

Identify curricular pathways and work on standards-aligned unit plans that lead from joyful, hopeful and/or wondrous phenomena/engineering challenges to meaningful energy or climate action
Experience hands-on, minds-on lessons from the student perspective, and engage in play each day.
Access opportunities for further collaboration with VEEP/NHEEP for student workshops, PD, curriculum development, action projects, and more.
Become part of our cohort of teachers dedicated both to serving students and moving towards sustainability in our communities, economy and environment

** Our data and case studies are generally specific to Vermont and New Hampshire, but the content should be universally applicable.

COST

Early Bird Pricing - $900 for the whole week if you sign up by 5/1/2023!
$1000 after 5/1/2023 (includes bunkhouse accommodations and all meals)
$140 additional cost if you'd like to be in a private room (first come, first served).

CREDIT

All participants will receive professional development certificates.

Graduate credit is available through Castleton University for an additional fee and some continuing coursework. Details/Cost TBD.

We hope to make Summer Institute accessible to all Vermont and New Hampshire educators interested in participating in the program. Please contact us at info@veep.org if you have any questions about the program cost. Out of state educators are welcome to join, but at this time our funding can only subsidize the costs for Vermont and New Hampshire teachers.

Participants will be lodged in a shared, camp-style bunkhouse unless you choose a private room for an additional cost. Use this space to tell us if you have any roommate requests (specific person, same gender, etc).

*If you have a private room, it is possible for family or guests to stay with you. We will need to make arrangements with the World Fellowship Center for additional fees for your guests.

The process of using an anchoring phenomenon to get students thinking about a topic and then modeling their current understanding while recording questions, then organizing the whole class's questions was very useful. It helped me think about how to kick off a unit in a more student-centered way.

I had a terrific time at the Summer Institute last year. It was just the springboard I needed to launch into a year of climate studies with my middle school students. It was nice to come together with other teachers from around the region to share ideas and explore how to implement project-based learning. I appreciated VEEP's hands-on approach, presenting the material in a discussion-based, project-centered way that allowed us to experience both the subject matter and the teaching philosophy in an authentic manner. Those teaching kits and the curricula are such gems! I lugged the six (or was it eight?) Climate Change bins all the way back to school, then dug into them periodically to find cool science gear that we just don't have in our classroom... like infrared thermometers! I've been pulling pieces from that curriculum all year. It has formed the backbone of our studies from which we've branched off in a number of interdisciplinary directions. I also benefited from the one-on-one planning support from VEEP staff during the Institute, and ended up following up on one suggestion from Aubrey that resulted in our students measuring carbon sequestration in trees on our campus. Cool stuff! I also love the data and charts of energy use, heat loss, and transportation, which have become touchstones for a number of projects.
